Installing and Configuring a Modem

Modem installations are among the most common upgrades users perform, if only because of the rapid-fire improvement of modem speeds to the current level of 56 kilobits per second (Kbps). Although I recommend that you buy the fastest modem you can easily afford, the final decision is a question of internal versus external design.

Internal Versus External Modems

The main advantage of internal modems is their lower cost: They often cost $20–$30 less than their external counterparts. Part of the savings is due to the fact that internal models don't include the power supply, plastic case, and serial cable found on external modems.
