Taming the Windows Interface

The Windows interface is a nearly perfect example of why "one size fits all" never quite fits anyone. Most of the default settings were carefully selected to be acceptable for the average user. But each of us is different, and because Windows offers a multitude of ways to do everything, it's only natural for different people to prefer different techniques to accomplish the same goal.

Adjusting all the elements of the Windows interface takes time. After you set up Windows for the first time, of course, you'll find yourself adjusting a slew of settings that don't quite work right. In this chapter, I'll show you dozens of ways to tweak the Windows interface so it looks, sounds, and acts the way you want it to. This chapter includes details on how to change the basic appearance of Windows and how to personalize it with graphics, sounds, and other entertaining elements.
