Chapter 36. Windows Script Host > Better Living Through Scripting

Better Living Through Scripting

Scripting is the process of automating a task on an operating system. Until quite recently, if you wanted to automate something on any of Microsoft's operating systems, your only option was to write a batch file. The batch file language can use almost any command you can run at the command prompt and adds some primitive looping constructs.

You might write a batch file that you run once a week to clean up the temporary folders on your PC, for example. Another common batch file is the logon script that runs when the user logs on to his or her domain. A logon script typically maps various network shares to drive letters or synchronizes the local time on the user's workstation with that of the rest of the network.
