The Details

NetMeeting is an Internet-based video and audio conferencing program based on common standards of Internet telephony. In addition to video and audio transmission (that can be used for traditional video teleconferencing or placing Internet telephone calls), it also contains a "whiteboard," keyboard chat mode (like AOL Instant Messenger or ICQ), and a few other goodies such as file transfer and Desktop Sharing. The whiteboard is great for sharing a drawing, map, picture, or other graphic and letting multiple folks in the conference edit it, point to objects, and so on. The chat window is the lowest common denominator for communications when both parties are not video or audio enabled.

Each feature is optional, so you can run chat only, for example, or audio without video. In fact, because the program is sometimes plagued by little gremlins (Internet traffic and incomplete connections?), resorting to one or another of the lower-level modes of communication is sometimes necessary anyway.
