Tips from the Windows Pros: Avoiding NetMeeting Lurkers

As you might have noticed, the ILS servers not only are hard to get logged on to, but once you do, they are a bit unfriendly. Most of the folks there seem to be lurking, waiting for some fresh meat. I even had trouble taking a screen shot of an ILS listing for this chapter without annoying the censors. What's more, when you log on to an ILS server, you see scores of folks whom you're not interested in talking to, and they can see you and can hassle you by calling you for a chat.

The solution is to use one of a growing breed of small messaging servers that alert people when their friends are connected to the Net and let them send short messages to each other in real-time. Essentially the same as the Chat box in NetMeeting, these programs are standalone applets that keep track of when people log in and off them, keeping a database much like the ILSs do. However, they are more private, so folks you don't know can't see you or bug you.
