Preventing Data Loss When Reinstalling Your OS

When I reinstalled Windows, my data files were erased, too.

As explained in Chapter 33, some folks preach a strict separation of OS, data, and applications. This segregation provides an increase in fault tolerance. When or if your OS partition dies, you can reformat it, reinstall the OS, and your data is still in tack. If your apps are on yet another partition, you have one level more of the same type of protection. You might want to read Chapter 33 for more about this and similar arrangements.
