Using the Computer Management Console

Wouldn't it be nice if you could easily see which hardware resources are being used and which are free? This isn't as necessary in these days of Plug and Play as it was when legacy hardware ruled, but it's still required for serious sleuthing. The Computer Management Console lets you do just that. In Windows 9x and NT 4, you could list used and free resources in a variety of sort orders via a trick in the Device Manager (by checking the Computer properties). This trick doesn't work in Windows 2000 Professional. Here's how to see them in Windows 2000:

  1. Run Computer Management. (An easy way to run it is to right-click My Computer and choose Manage.)

  2. Open System Tools, System Information, Hardware Resources.

  3. Click the listing of your heart's desire. Figure 30.10 shows the current assignments on one of my computers. Notice that several items share the same IRQ.
