What's New in Windows 2000?

At this point, you're probably wondering what is new in Windows 2000. As I'm writing these Windows books, people always ask me whether the new version of Windows is different enough to warrant upgrading. I can definitely say this is a major upgrade, on the order of the difference between Windows 3.11 and Windows 95. Windows 2000 is a huge accomplishment. Estimates are that by the time it was released, it contained about 29 million lines of code (see Table 1.1). In that code, you will find much to enjoy.

Table 1.1. Lines of Code Comparison
Operating SystemLines of Programming Code
NT 3.16.5 million
NT 3.510 million
NT 416.5 million
Windows 2000>29 million
Windows 2000 Advanced Server>33 million
Windows 2000 Datacenter>40 million
