Troubleshooting a New Internet Connection

The first time you establish a dial-up connection is the most difficult because everything is new: new hardware, new software components, new procedures, and new usernames and passwords. If the connection doesn't work, you'll have to be very thorough in determining exactly what went wrong.

In troubleshooting hardware and software over the last 15 years or so, I've always found that the phrase "It doesn't work" isn't terribly useful. I always ask, "What does happen?"
