Game Controllers

If you're serious about playing games on your computer, you need a game controller; that means something more than a mouse. Typical controllers are joystick, gamepad, flight yoke, driving wheel, or other hardware devices designed specifically for the games of your choice. If you're an extreme gamer, normal old joysticks and gamepads won't cut the mustard either. High-tech gaming these days requires high-tech controls. Game controllers have reached the point at which serious flight simulator enthusiasts hook up a yoke and separate rudder foot pedals to more accurately simulate the flying experience.

This book doesn't cover gaming to any extent, but if you are a gamer, and you buy a game controller, it likely comes with an installation program. If not, you can hook up the controller, run the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard, and see whether the controller is installed. If that doesn't do the job for you, run the Game Controllers applet, choose Add, and then choose the type of controller you have (see Figure 29.13).
