Compressing a Disk

If you are like many computer users, you may reach the limits of the storage space on your computer as you install new programs and generate more and more data files. You've probably also discovered that new releases of Windows programs seem to take up more and more room on your hard disk. One solution is to install a new hard disk in your computer. But if you have limited finances, or you work with a laptop in which it is not possible to add another hard disk, you have another option. Windows 95 comes with a program called DriveSpace that enables you to squeeze more storage space from your existing hard drive. DriveSpace is a software solution to your hardware problem. DriveSpace works by compressing the files on your hard disk so that they take up less room. When you need to use a file, DriveSpace automatically decompresses it. The compression and decompression of files happens transparently—you are not even aware that it is happening. You will notice very little delay in file access when you use DriveSpace.
