Chapter 10. Navigating and Controlling W... > Starting Programs from a Shortcut Ic...

Starting Programs from a Shortcut Icon

Another method for starting programs is to create shortcuts for the programs that you use most frequently. These shortcuts can appear as icons on your desktop or on the Quick Launch bar. To run a program or open a window, you use its shortcut icon. If you don't like using menus to start your programs, you might prefer using shortcuts. In both cases, however, there are drawbacks. To access shortcut icons on the desktop, you have to first clear any open windows out of the way; if a program is maximized, you cannot see the shortcuts. And although the Quick Launch bar is useful, it reduces the amount of space available for taskbar buttons, making it harder to see at a glance which programs are open.
