Part VIII: Appendixes > Off-the-Shelf Information

Off-the-Shelf Information

If you cannot use online information services, or if you want to supplement those services with information that is more quickly accessible, then you may be interested in printed or software-based resources. The information services covered in this section includes books, periodicals, and software, such as CD subscription services.

Resource Kits

Microsoft develops and sells the Windows NT Resource Kit. Similar resource kits are also available for Windows 95, Windows 3.1, and Windows for Workgroups. Resource kits pick up where the shipped documentation leaves off. A resource kit provides detailed, technical information about many areas of the product it covers. In the case of the Windows NT Resource Kit, you can find troubleshooting information, architectural discussions, network connectivity issues explored, hardware compatibility information, performance monitoring and tuning instruction, and more. Because resource kits tend to focus more on tasks than technology, it's usually very easy to find the information you're looking for. Lastly, most resource kits contain software, including utilities, and implementation and planning tools.
