Understanding the Hardware Terminology

It's probably a good idea to take a brief look at what some of these hardware choices represent, and define some of the terms.

Network Adapters

A network adapter, which is also called a network interface card (NIC), is a board that is inserted in a computer to provide a link to the cable that connects the computer to a network. The type of cable varies, matching the topology choices made by the network administrator. It might be thick or thin cable with a connector, or it might look like telephone cable with a connection resembling a standard telephone jack and connector.
