What Is Windows NT?

Windows NT is Microsoft's high-end, high-performance, Windows-based operating system. The NT stands for new technology. Microsoft has positioned Windows NT as the operating system for the business, whereas Windows 95 is the operating system for the home. This section provides a quick review of Windows NT's features and capabilities. Many of these items are covered in detail later in this chapter.

Windows NT is a 32-bit, preemptive multitasking, multithreading operating system. As an operating system, Windows NT is the system that runs your computer. Windows NT's multitasking support generally means that you can do more than one thing at once while running Windows NT, such as recalculate a spreadsheet while you check the spelling of a document you've written using a word processing program. Multithreading means that some of the applications you run in Windows NT can do more than one task at once, such as performing complex calculations while letting you input more data.
