Part VIII: Appendixes > Briefcase and Access 97 Databases

Briefcase and Access 97 Databases

Access 97 is just one of the applications which support, or will support, Briefcase replication. It is used as an example here because it goes a step beyond the simpler word processing and spreadsheet applications. When used with applications which fully support reconciliation, Briefcase generates what is known as a design master. Then replicas are made of this design master in multiple Briefcases. The design master and the replicas form a replica set. Changes can be made to the data in the replicas, but not to the design.

Whenever a file with an MDB extension is dragged into the briefcase, the Briefcase calls its reconciler code to convert the Access database to a replicable format. The converted file at the original location is known as the Design Master. A replica of the Master MDB file is placed in the Briefcase.
