Using the Performance Monitor

To see a detailed view of what's going on in your system, use the Performance Monitor—a graphical tool that displays the performance levels of all the system elements. In the Performance Monitor, each system resource is treated as an object. For example, if you have multiple processors, you see multiple processor objects; there's an object for each physical disk, an object for each running process, running thread, and so on. When you use the Performance Monitor, you are monitoring the objects.

Before we explore the way Performance Monitor works, it's a good idea to define some of the terms you'll run into:
