Chapter 16. Integrating Windows NT in No... > NetWare 3.1x versus 4.x Issues

NetWare 3.1x versus 4.x Issues

The primary difference between versions 3.1x and 4.x of NetWare is in the way database user, group, and server information is stored. Version 3.1x of NetWare use a database called a bindery and in version 4.x, the bindery is replaced by Network Directory Services (NDS).

The bindery manages one server; whereas NDS supports the whole network, including every resource on the network: users, groups, printers, volumes, and servers. Additionally, version 4.x of NetWare supplies what is called bindery emulation which provides compatibility with previous versions of NetWare.
