Setting Up LMHOSTS

Windows NT uses the LMHOSTS file to help resolve computer names, which users understand, to actual IP addresses. Before DNS and WINS, this was the primary method of resolving names. Now, with DNS and WINS, LMHOSTS files are used less frequently. LMHOSTS files are used primarily to resolve names for remote computers, computers that are not on the local subnet. (A WINS Server can automatically resolve any local computer names.)

Understanding LMHOSTS Files

An LMHOSTS file is simply a text file that contains information that Windows NT can use to resolve computer names to IP addresses. You can use any text editor to modify an LMHOSTS file—it's simply an ASCII text file. However, knowing what to change is the difficult task. If a few simple rules are followed, changing the LMHOSTS file is not hard. The format of an LMHOSTS file consists of the following pieces:
