Lesson 2. Working with a Window > What Is a Window?

What Is a Window?

A window is a boxed area in which you view files, folders, drives, hardware icons, or other elements. Figure 2.1 shows the components that make up a window. Many of these components are the same for all windows in Windows NT and Windows applications, which makes it easy for you to manage your work. Keep in mind that although most windows are similar, you will run across some windows that do not have all of the following components.

You can open and close a window, reduce and enlarge a window, and move a window around—which is what this lesson is all about. In addition, you can open more than one window at a time, stack one window on top of another, and otherwise manipulate windows as explained in Lessons 13 and 14.
