Lesson 18. Viewing a Network Drive > Using a User Name and Password

Using a User Name and Password

You know that to gain access to Windows NT, you must enter your user name and password, which identify you to the computer, and to the network, if you are attached to one. The user name that appears when you log on to Windows NT and the password you enter are those that you or the system administrator created while running Setup. These devices provide security not only for your work, but for the entire network. Therefore, someone who does not know his or her user name and password cannot log on to the network.

After you do log on, you can run applications, print and save files, share files, and so on. You also have control over who shares the files and directories on your computer (see Lessons 21 and 22).
