Shutting Down Windows NT

Before you turn off your computer, you must shut down Windows NT to ensure that you don't lose any data or configuration changes. Lesson 26 describes shutting down in more detail and offers various methods you can use. However, to quickly shut down Windows NT, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Alt key, and then press and release the F4 key. Release the Alt key. First, the open windows and applications close, one at a time. When all open windows are closed, the Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.

  2. Choose Shut down the Computer? by clicking its option.

  3. Press the Enter key or choose Yes, and Windows NT begins the process of shutting down. When NT displays a message saying you can safely turn off your computer, you can turn off both the monitor and the computer.
