Installing WINS

The system running the WINS service should be a Windows 2000 Server with adequate processor and disk resources. These steps take you through the installation process:

  1. Open the Add/Remove Windows Components Wizard found in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel.

For more information about the Windows Components Wizard, see Chapter 8.1, "Overview of Managing Network Services."

  2. Scroll through the list of components and click Networking Services.

  3. Click Details.

  4. Scroll through the list and check the box next to Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). Click OK.

  5. When and if prompted, enter the path to the Windows 2000 distribution files and click Continue.

  6. When the installation is finished, you will not be prompted to restart your system, but it is advisable if you can spare the downtime. At this point, WINS management can begin.

  7. Make sure that the WINS Server is configured to use itself for WINS resolution and registration. Check the Advanced TCP/IP properties to make sure this is the case.
