Overview of WINS

The Windows Internet Name Service keeps a dynamic database that allows clients to register their names and to resolve the names of other systems to IP addresses. The dynamic nature of WINS allows it to have up-to-the-minute information on the systems it keeps track of. WINS is similar to DNS in that it maps names to IP addresses The names that it maps are not host names, however, they are NetBIOS names, which represent users and services located at specific IP addresses.

A NetBIOS name is special because it has a fixed, 16-character length; and it contains within itself a code that tells what kind of resource or service it refers to. If the computer name has fewer than 15 characters, the space between the name and the end of the name is filled with spaces. The 16th character is always the resource indicator.
