Chapter 7.3. Windows Installer > Create .zap Installation Files

Create .zap Installation Files

Files called .zap files can also be used to install files, which do not have a native .msi file. They provide the lowest functionality of any file type used with Windows Installer. They can be used only to publish applications; an .msi file is required to assign applications.

The .zap files are created using a standard text editor. Only two entries in one section are required. The [Application] section must contain both the FriendlyName and SetupCommand entries. The FriendlyName creates a name for the application to be listed under in Add and Remove programs. The SetupCommand entry specifies the command line, which is used to install the program. The [ext], [CLSIDs], [progIDs] sections and all other settings in the [Application] section are optional.
