Chapter 7.3. Windows Installer > Windows Installer

Windows Installer

The Windows platform has never had an integrated software-installation system. Instead, software developers have been responsible for creating their own installation routines. Most of these routines use script-based engines, which create directories, install files, and establish Registry entries. This approach coupled with a lack of standardization has led to several problems:

  • Difficulty uninstalling applications because some vendors do not adequately track the use of shared files

  • Configuration problems due to overwriting existing system .dlls with incorrect versions

  • Inability to repair applications where files have been corrupted

  • Incomplete "rollback" of failed installations

  • No support for installation with security privileges higher than the end user
