Chapter 2.6. The Registry > Using the Registry Editor

Using the Registry Editor

As stated earlier, the Registry editors must be used with respect and full knowledge of what can happen if the Registry is changed. The Registry editors do not check for syntax or other typographical errors. The Registry is not self-healing if a problem results. To a degree, there are ways of overcoming and repairing incorrectly configured Registry entries, but the best prevention is simply—don't.

That is easier said than done, and it is sometimes unavoidable. Basically, there is no guarantee for a healthy system on reboot. It seems redundant to keep harping on this, but it is so very critical to document the changes as well as possible. Above all else, keep a good, current backup!
