Chapter 5.3. Sharing Folders > Creating a Shared Folder

Creating a Shared Folder

Shared folders can be created though the GUI or with the NET SHARE command, which can be used in batch files as well as at a command prompt.

There are two main ways to set up sharing through the GUI (even within the GUI, there is more than one way). The most common way, however, is to call up the property pages for the folder to be shared and then use the sharing page. It is possible to go directly to this page by choosing Sharing from the Folders context menu or the File menu in Explorer. Only Administrators and members of the Server Operators group are allowed to create shares on Windows 2000 Server systems. Windows 2000 Professional does not have a Server Operators group; on Windows 2000, Professional, Administrators and Power Users have the ability to add and remove shares.
