Chapter 8.5. Remote Access Service (RAS) > Testing and Monitoring RAS

Testing and Monitoring RAS

Windows 2000 comes with nifty tools to test and monitor RAS. First, the command-line NetShell utility, netsh: Netsh queries interfaces, protocols, and the RAS on Windows 2000 computers. It can also query other services such as DHCP and WINS. Netsh uses the RAS context to make queries to RAS protocols. See Windows 2000 help, or type Netsh ras ? at the command line.

Windows NT's Performance Monitor has become a couple of MMC snap-ins. You can still type perfmon at the command line, which will bring up the MMC with the System Monitor and Performance Logs and Alerts Snap-ins. Use this tool to monitor RAS activity on the computer. Performance Logs and Alerts offer several performance objects to monitor. For example, the RAS port object monitors activity per media type and per tunnel. RAS totals offer additional counters for overall activity.
