Upgrading Applications

Upgrading an application can mean a number of different things. Usually, upgrading means replacing one version of an application with a newer release of the same application for example, replacing Office 97 with Office 2000). It could also mean replacing one application with a completely different application (for example, replacing Lotus 1-2-3 with Microsoft Excel). Finally, it might simply mean applying a service pack or patch to an existing application.

Varying support is available for upgrading applications that were originally installed through GPO Software Installation. Complete replacement of an application is accomplished through an .msi file. Patching an application is accomplished through an .msp file.
