Assigning Applications

Assigning applications to computers or users is a good way to preinstall or give the appearance of preinstalling applications. Assigning applications to users is a good way to support roaming users who log in from a variety of workstations. Assigning applications to computers can be used to preinstall common software packages used by everyone. Computer assignments can even be used as part of a deployment strategy, which uses RIS to install the operating system and assigned applications to install standard software.

Applications assigned to users will only install desktop and Start menu shortcuts when a user logs on. This minimizes the time required for installation during logon. It also limits the amount of disk space required unless a user actually uses the assigned program. Applications assigned to computers will fully install during computer startup. Both types will create file associations in the Registry for the application.
