Versions of Windows 2000

There are four versions of Windows 2000. All of these versions share a common base operating system. The differences between them are the additional features that are included with the product and the way that versions of Windows 2000 are "tuned" for performance.

Windows 2000 Professional. This version of Windows 2000 is designed for corporate as their personal desktop operating system. You should use this operating system as your primary desktop mainly because it is tuned to perform as a network client and personal workstation.

Windows 2000 Server. All the "server" versions of Windows 2000 provide a robust, secure environment for providing file, print, and application services to client computers. Windows 2000 Server is the "basic" server. Advanced Server and Datacenter Server provide additional features and support larger hardware platforms. This version of Windows 2000 provides the best server platform for most organizations.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Use this version of Windows 2000 on servers needing more memory and processors than Windows 2000 Server can handle. It also adds clustering and network load balancing services.

For more information, see Windows Clustering and Load Balancing later in this chapter.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. If you have applications that require very large amounts of memory or processors, or that need more support for fault tolerance and higher availability than Windows 2000 Advanced Server, this is the operating system to run. Generally, this version of Windows will be installed on very high-end systems provided by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and sold to larger companies through Value-Added Resellers (VARs).
