Chapter 7.1. Overview of Managing Applic... > Publishing and Advertising Applicati...

Publishing and Advertising Applications

Software can be either published or assigned for installation. Assigning an application adds shortcuts to the Start menu on the Windows 2000 desktop. Choosing one of these shortcuts will launch Windows Installer to install the application. Assigned applications may also be invoked by accessing a file ending in an extension associated with that particular application. For example, double-clicking on a file with an .xls extension might launch the installation for Microsoft Excel.

Publishing will add the software to a list of programs available for installation in the Add and Remove Programs icon of the Control Panel. Published applications have the option of also being installed when a user accesses an associated file with the proper extension.
