Going Deeper: Practical Applications

As we have seen, Windows 2000 provides a wealth of possibilities when it comes to IP routing. In this section, we'll look at scenarios in which you might use these tools to solve specific problems. Remember that using a Windows 2000 server as a complete replacement for a dedicated hardware router will probably not be cost-effective. But there are many times that an existing Windows 2000 server could take on some IP routing functions and prevent the purchase of an additional hardware router. The following scenarios are not meant to suggest that these are the only valid uses of Windows 2000 IP routing. They are meant to suggest some good potential uses. You may think of others that are just as valid.
