Chapter 2.2. Installing Windows 2000 Ser... > Remote Installation Services (RIS)

Remote Installation Services (RIS)

The methods for installing Windows 2000 described so far in this chapter either require that you boot from Windows 2000 media (the CD-ROM or Setup boot floppy disks) or start another Microsoft operating system (DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0) to access the source files and run the Setup program.

What if you want to simply turn on a computer that has no operating system installed and have Windows 2000 automatically install from the network? That's what Remote Installation Services (RIS) does.
