Best Practices for Group Policy Architecture and Application

  • Use descriptive titles for your Group Policy objects. This helps to determine at a glance what the functions are.

  • If either the user configuration or computer configuration segments of the GPO have no settings configured, disable that portion. This will decrease overall processing time and server load.

  • Use caution when exercising the Block Inheritance and No Override functions. Troubleshooting becomes very convoluted in an environment that overuses these functions. The majority of the reasons to use these features can be addressed by a well-thought-out GPO design.
