File System Format

Hard disks, floppy disks, and CDs all contain file systems. CD-ROMs use their own file system (CDFS), floppy disks are formatted with FAT16, and hard disk partitions have a choice of FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS. Only when a partition has been created and formatted with a file system do we have a usable volume. Reformatting an existing volume erases all the data stored on it.

There are multiple ways of formatting a disk.
