Installing and Configuring DHCP Server

The question of where to put your DHCP server and how many of them to use is a good one. A DHCP server can service a very large user base, so the essential factor is availability. For a single non-routed LAN, there is no compelling reason to have more than one DHCP server. Because no existing clients lose their IP addresses until at least half of the normal lease period has passed, there is usually enough time for the DHCP server to be rebuilt or replaced in case of a hardware failure.
