Resource Records

As mentioned in Chapter 4.2, "DNS and Active Directory," resource records (RRs) are the smallest unit in the DNS database. They are what make up the zone files, and each individual record either performs some IP address/hostname mapping, sets DNS functionality parameters, or provides information about advertised services. The most common records are as follows:

SOA Record

The SOA (Start of Authority) record is the first record in a zone file. The following is an example of an SOA record:
