The DNS Namespace

Previous versions of Windows NT were built on NetBIOS. To provide name resolution services for NetBIOS over the Transmission Control Prococol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) was created. This allows you to resolve 16-character NetBIOS names to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
