Chapter 5.6. Auditing Resource Access > Auditing Access to Files

Auditing Access to Files

The NTFS file system maintains two Access Control Lists for every file or folder. One of these controls access to files or folders, and is usually just called the Access Control List. More accurately, it is the Discretionary Access Control List. A second list that is very similar in structure controls auditing. This is called the System Access Control List.

The Discretionary Access Control List contains Access Control Entries (ACES), which set the permissions for users and groups. Each ACE contains a Security ID (SID) for the user or group and the access to be granted or denied.
