What Hardware Does Your Network Need?

So, you’ve decided you want to set up a network. Now what? Before your computers can communicate with one another, you need to add the right hardware. Each computer needs a device called a network adapter, which transmits and receives packets of information among other computers on the network. In addition, you probably need a hub, switch, or other central connecting point.

When Windows sends data across a network, it chops the transmission into manageable chunks called packets, each of a fixed size. Each packet has an envelope, which contains the address of the destination computer and information about how to reassemble the packets into the file or message that was originally sent.
