Keep Hackers Out with a Firewall

Every time you connect to the Internet, you open the door to a world of incredible information and entertainment. Unfortunately, that door swings both ways, and unless you take precautions, you run the risk that an unscrupulous person can break into your computer. Most people have misconceptions about the world of hackers, probably fueled by too many bad movies where teenage hackers with a limitless supply of pizza and Mountain Dew ruthlessly focus on a single computer, tapping keys and scowling until they finally break in.

In the real world, hacking is far more boring. Most attempts to break in to computers are performed by automated software programs run by technically unsophisticated teens looking for unprotected computers that they can break into. These programs, called port scanners, load up one Internet address after another, quickly, and try to break in using known security holes. Think of it as the equivalent of someone walking down your street, trying every doorknob in search of one that’s unlocked.
