Chapter 10. Organizing Your Files > Working with Hidden Files

Working with Hidden Files

If you like to see everything in Windows Explorer, you might want to display any hidden files or folders on your system. By default, Windows XP hides system files and folders. Many programs, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, also hide temporary files that are created as you work but aren’t intended for you to use directly. In some cases, you might want to see all the files in a folder, even those that are hidden. This option is important, for example, if you’re planning to manually move all files from one folder to another. If files are hidden, you might leave some behind without even knowing it. To show hidden files, click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box and select Show Hidden Files And Folders from the Advanced Settings list. Click OK to save your settings. To see system files as well, clear the Hide Protected Operating System File check box. When you choose this option, you see the warning dialog box shown here. Click Yes to continue or No to cancel.
