Chapter 9. Making Windows Work Your Way > Choose Your Interface: Windows XP or ...

Choose Your Interface: Windows XP or Windows Classic

Be honest: What did you really think the first time you saw the Windows XP user interface? Did you say, “Wow, that’s cool...”? Or did you reach for your sunglasses? With its brilliant colors, rounded windows, and oversized icons, it’s a dramatic switch from the good ol’ Windows 95 or Windows 98 desktop you’ve probably grown accustomed to over the past few years. Eventually, some people learn to love the new look (especially when they learn how it makes so many tasks easier to accomplish). But others consider the new interface garish and unpleasantly reminiscent of a Saturday morning cartoon. Beauty, it seems, is in the eye of the beholder, especially when it comes to Windows.

Well, never fear. If you prefer classic rock, classic cars, and classic Coke, you can add the Classic Windows visual style to your environment, too. In fact, you can mix and match elements of the new and old interface.
