Key Points

  • Whenever you install a new program, be sure to run the Setup program to do the job properly.

  • Always check for updates when installing a new program. This is especially important for software that wasn’t originally written for Windows XP.

  • Set a System Checkpoint before installing or uninstalling a program. If anything goes wrong, you can roll your system configuration back to the way it was and get things working right again in a jiffy.

  • Create shortcuts for the programs you use most often and add them to the Start menu, the Quick Launch toolbar, the desktop, and any other place where you can find them when you want to use the program.

  • Set up keyboard shortcuts for your favorite programs to make them easier to start up.

  • Add your most favorite programs, the ones you use every day, to the Startup group so they load automatically when you log on to your computer.

  • Learn how to control which program opens files of a particular type.
