Make Windows Run Faster

It’s a basic fact of life: Your computer never runs as fast as you want. If you feel the need for speed, try some of the techniques I describe in this section, which can rev up your computer to a higher gear. (As an extra bonus, some of these tips also help your computer run more reliably by reducing the risk of crashes.)

Defragment Your Hard Disk

Every time you save a file to your hard disk, Windows chops it into small pieces and stores it wherever it finds space. When you retrieve the file so you can work with it later, Windows retrieves all those pieces and reassembles them on the fly. On a freshly formatted new disk, each file gets its own block of storage space, with all the individual clusters lined up neatly alongside one another. The mechanical components that make up the hard disk can read these contiguous clusters easily, making the task of retrieving your file quick and efficient.
