Chapter 2. How Windows Works (and How to... > Change Settings with Control Panel

Change Settings with Control Panel

When you want to change the seemingly endless array of settings in Windows, your first stop should be Control Panel. This all-in-one window contains icons that lead to a host of options. Don’t be intimidated by the Control Panel. Although some of its options might seem technical, most are easy to use and perfectly safe.

To see what options are available on your PC, click Start and then click the Control Panel icon. If you’ve used Control Panel in a previous version of Windows, you might be a bit confused when you see the organization of icons in the Windows XP Control Panel. As Figure 2-11 shows, icons are arranged by category, rather than being lumped together in a single window, all in alphabetical order. The result is less clutter, but it also requires that you know exactly which category contains the icon you’re looking for. If you guess wrong, you must click Back and try another category.
