Chapter 2. How Windows Works (and How to Work with Windows)

Chapter 2. How Windows Works (and How to Work with Windows)

You know about the basics of Windows, like the Start menu and the taskbar, but what’s really new in Microsoft Windows XP? If you previously used Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), you’re used to doing things a certain way, and you’ll need to make a few adjustments in Windows XP. You’ll need to log on with a user name and (optionally) a password. The Control Panel looks different than you remember. Formatting a disk requires a different set of steps. Even the simple job of shutting down your computer is different.

In this chapter, I’ll walk you through what’s new, with a special emphasis on the basic building blocks of Windows—the Welcome screen, Control Panel, the Disk Management console, and other tools that you can use to keep your computer running at top speed with no stalls.
