Chapter 7. E-Mail Made Easy > Checking Your E-Mail

Checking Your E-Mail

By default, Outlook Express checks for new messages every 30 minutes. It does this automatically, as long as Outlook Express is running and you’re connected to the Internet. If you have a cable modem, DSL, or another “always on” Internet connection, this is a convenient feature. When you sit down in front of your computer, your mail is already there waiting for you.

However, that 30-minute interval might not be right for you. If you use Outlook Express for business and you’re at your computer all day long, maybe you want to check your e-mail every 5 or 10 minutes. On the other hand, if you have a dial-up connection, you might decide that you never want Outlook Express to check for messages on its own so that you can send and receive messages manually exactly when you want. To set these options, go to the main Outlook Express window and choose Options from the Tools menu. On the General tab of the Options dialog box shown below, look at the group of settings under Send/Receive Messages.
